Application Deadline: Monday, February 2nd, 2026

About the Program:
Forsyth County Urban Farm School is an intensive 12 week class for individuals motivated to start a business growing and selling produce.

This course is an opportunity for adult students to learn about creating and running a small market garden or urban farm. This 12-week hands-on course takes students through soil preparation, seeding, transplanting, food safety, harvest and finally to sale of their produce. The class will meet twice a week for 12 weeks between March and June working both in the classroom and in a student-managed field plot. By planting, growing, harvesting and selling a season’s crop, students can expect to gain experience with practical methods of farming with an eye for economic empowerment to benefit their families and their community.

Topics covered include: site selection, soil health, crop selection/establishment, production mapping, irrigation, fertility management, integrated pest and disease management, business planning, pre-/post harvest produce safety, and direct to consumer marketing. Students are responsible for attending classroom and field sessions during which they will establish and maintain field plots with spring crops.

The classroom location is at 1450 Fairchild Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27105 and 7232 Forsyth Center Drive, Tobaccoville, NC 27050.
