Celebrate Juneteenth at Malloy/Jordan on June 19

The Malloy/Jordan East Winston Heritage Center is hosting a Juneteenth celebration for the whole family on Wednesday, June 19 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. This year marks 159 years since Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, with the news that the more than 250,000 enslaved Black people in the state were free. 2024 also marks the third year since Juneteenth became a federal holiday.

Juneteenth celebrations around the country are a time to remember the struggle and celebrate the Emancipation Proclamation and the ratification of the 13th Amendment.

The celebration at Malloy/Jordan includes a special performance by The North Carolina Black Repertory Company Youth Theatre Ensemble and Greater Vision Dance Company. After the performance, we’ll be enjoying games and treats on the library’s back lawn and making Juneteenth windsocks to take home.
