Headline (50 char max) Walkertown Medicine Drop-Off a Success

On January 25th, the Town of Walkertown, Forsyth County Public Library and Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office hosted a medicine drop-off event for citizens to safely dispose of unwanted over the counter and prescription medications.

By providing safe and secure ways for people to get rid of unwanted medications, accidental poisonings, drug abuse and water contamination are reduced. Fatal drug overdoses are now the leading cause of death due to unintentional injury, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Prescription and over-the-counter medications cause more than three-fourths of all unintentional poisonings in North Carolina, according to the N.C. Division of Public Health.

The drop-off event in Walkertown allowed approximately 75 people to discard 74.53 pounds of unwanted medication. Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office staff and volunteers assisted citizens in disposing of medications and secured collected items to be properly destroyed.
