Children Invited To Read to a Dog August 10th at Walkertown

Tesla, a Tail-Waggin' Tutor, is a trained therapy dog owned by Shelly Swidick of Kernersville. Shelly and Tesla volunteer their time listening to young readers because the experience yields many benefits. Primarily, students improve reading skills. Besides practicing the tasks of decoding longer words and recognizing sight words, they gain fluency and self-confidence. Additionally, this brief and safe exposure to such a calm, controlled dog can help minimize a fear of dogs.

Tesla's visits are fun for all involved. Anytime a young reader comes to the library for a program, it's an opportunity to go home with books. This month, children of all ages can register for Summer Reading and be entered into drawings for Barnes and Noble gift cards or Wake Forest University Football tickets. The minutes you read to a dog--or any pet--along with all your minutes reading or listening to books or ebooks, all those minutes count toward the goal of 480 minutes by Friday, July 31.
