Archaeological Investigations of the Saura Indians in Stokes County

Dr. Stephen Davis will present the results of archaeological investigations conducted by the University of North Carolina at sites in Stokes County that were occupied by the Saura Indians in the 1600s and early 1700s. These sites are known historically as Upper Sauratown and excavations there were conducted over 11 summers between 1972 and 1988. Dr. Davis was personally involved with the fieldwork in 1972-1974 and in 1988.

Dr. Stephen Davis, (A.B., University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill 1974; M.A., University of Calgary 1976; Ph.D., University of Tennessee 1986) is currently Research Archaeologist and Associate Director of the Research Laboratories of Archaeology and Adjunct Professor of Anthropology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is editor of the North Carolina Archaeological Society’s journal North Carolina Archaeology, and he has served as editor of the scholarly journal Southeastern Archaeology (1991-1993), as chairman of the North Carolina Archaeological Council, and on several other professional boards and committees.
