Deputy Muhammad initiated a traffic stop on a Hyundai Santa Fe. The traffic stop was originally initiated for a violation of N.C. General Statute 20-127 (windshield tint below the AS1 line). When approaching the vehicle, Deputy Muhammad immediately smelled the odor of marijuana. A duct-taped wrapped club sticking out from the driver’s seat area was also observed. When attempting to identify the driver, he provided Deputy Mahammad with a fictitious name and date of birth. Through Deputy Muhammad’s training and experience, he was able to establish probable cause and search the vehicle. While the vehicle was being searched, the driver fled on foot and jumped over a fence. Deputy Muhammad was able to apprehend the driver during the foot pursuit, and he was placed under arrest. During the search of the vehicle, Deputy Muhammad located a stolen handgun, which was illegally concealed, and illegal drugs. Due to Deputy Muhammad’s exceptional vigilance, being aware of his surroundings and being proactive, the illegal drugs and handgun were removed from our streets to keep the Forsyth County citizens safe. Deputy Muhammad did not hesitate to apprehend the fleeing offender. The driver was arrested and charged with Felony Possession of a Stolen Firearm, Felony Possession of Carrying a Concealed Gun, Felony Maintaining a Vehicle for Controlled Substance, Felony Trafficking Opium or Heroin, Felony Possession with Intent to manufacture, Sell or Deliver, Possession of Marijuana, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.
