Synopsis and Discussion

Despite the low ran total this morning, lingering cloud cover from the departing low pressure system has kept air quality levels within the middle to upper Code GREEN range. Skies may begin to clear out later this afternoon, but the remaining hours of daylight should prevent significant ozone production before sunset. Dry high pressure settles over the Triad overnight, leading to a chilly start to Sunday morning. However, the high pressure ridge will be quiet transient as it is expected to move offshore by tomorrow evening. With that said, sunny skies should allow for enough ozone production to elevate air quality levels into the upper Code GREEN range. Temperatures will continue to warm up on Monday ahead of a weakening front moving in from the north. Precipitation will likely be minimal at best along the front, with increasing westerly to southwesterly winds allowing ozone concentrations to accumulate on the southern side of the weak boundary to elevate air quality levels into the lower Code YELLOW range on Monday. The front washes out and retreats northward as the offshore Bermuda high temporarily strengthens, with warm southwesterly winds and sunny skies leading to ozone levels to rise into the lower Code YELLOW range on Tuesday. (Payne) *** Due to increased wildfire risk and severe to extreme drought across most of the state, the N.C. Forest Service has issued a statewide ban on all open burning within their jurisdiction and has canceled all burning permits statewide. ***
