4-H Livestock Judging Team Wins Awards

The Forsyth/Stokes County Livestock Judging Team competed in the 2013 NC State 4-H Livestock Judging, Skillathon, and Quiz Bowl Contests on July 16 and 17 in Raleigh, NC.

Youth learn analytical and public speaking skills in the Livestock Judging Contest as they place classes of livestock and then give oral reasons on their placing to officials. The Junior Livestock Judging members won the following awards: Josie Stanberry won top individual overall, first in meat goats, and ninth in sheep. Hannah King placed second in sheep and fifth overall in oral reasons. Lynae Bowman placed ninth overall in oral reasons. Wesley Fishel placed fourth in beef cattle, Emma Stanberry placed sixth in swine, and Kali Mabe placed third in swine. The Junior Team placed first in oral reasons and third overall in the contest. The team consisted of Lynae Bowman, Wesley Fishel, Hannah King, and Kali Mabe. The Senior Livestock Judging Team members placing fourth overall and first in meat goats were: Tanner Birkholz, Tyler Bradshaw, Brandon Hartman, and Kate Hice. They won the following awards: Brandon Hartman, second place individual overall, ninth in oral reasons, first in meat goats, and second in beef cattle. Kate Hice, eighth place individual overall, seventh in meat goats, and ninth in cattle. Tanner Birkholz placed tenth overall in sheep.

In the Skillathon Contest youth test their knowledge on livestock management and identify various livestock breeds, feeds, equipment, and cuts of meat. Placing tenth overall in the Junior Skillathon Contest was Lynae Bowman with the Junior Team placing third. In the Senior Skillathon Contest Brandon Hartman placed fourth overall and the Senior Team placed fourth.

During the Quiz Bowl, teams face off against one another to answer management questions on livestock production. The senior team placed fourth overall in the Quiz Bowl contest.

Team members’ next Livestock Judging Contest will be the NC State Fair in November. The Livestock Judging Team coaches are April Bowman, Forsyth County 4-H Extension Agent and Chris Jeffcoat, Forsyth and Stokes County Area Agent for Livestock.
