Elevated ozone readings, possibly Code ORANGE in some areas, are expected to continue into the evening today. Particle pollution is hovering in the lower Code Yellow range. Conditions are expected to remain conducive for Code ORANGE ozone concentrations tomorrow and an Air Quality Alert will be in effect from 10 AM until 8 PM. Code ORANGE is Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups. Children, elderly, and people with any heart or lung disease (like asthma) should limit outdoor exertion. Additionally, a backdoor front will try to work into the Triad during the morning, and should it move sufficiently south, a handful of hours of Code ORANGE fine particle readings will be possible as some more noticeable wildfire smoke arrives in its wake. With that said, daily averages are expected to net out in the mid to upper Code Yellow range to round out the workweek and if the front stalls in southern VA then readings will likely be lower than forecast. Southwesterly surface winds on Saturday will help to scour out any smoke that makes its way into the area, however, averages are likely to net out somewhere in the mid Code Yellow range since this will take some time. That SW flow will also transport more moisture into the area, thereby creating storm chances and limiting ozone production to the lower Code Yellow range. Particle pollution is expected to continue decreasing for the latter half of the weekend. (Greg Perrotte / perrotgt@forsyth.cc)
