"Postcards from Madagascar" Zoom program on Sept. 13 at 6:30 p.m.

In this Zoom program, journalist, historian and travel writer David Mould shares his impressions and insights into Madagascar.

Cuddly lemurs, rare reptiles and baobab trees? Tropical beaches and cheap haute cuisine? Cartoon animals who escaped from a New York zoo? These are some of the popular images of the world’s fourth-largest island, Madagascar. David Mould, who made six trips to Madagascar as a research consultant for UNICEF, came back with different impressions. From the traffic jams and crowded markets of the colonial-era capital, Antananarivo (which he describes as “Paris with rice paddies”), he wanders through the Central Highlands, the eastern rain forest and the savannah and desert of the southwest, offering glimpses of the history, culture and politics of a beguiling but desperately poor country.

David H. Mould, Ph.D., professor emeritus of media arts and studies at Ohio University, worked as a newspaper and TV journalist in the United Kingdom before moving to the United States. He has traveled widely in Asia and southern Africa, and has written three books on travel, history and culture - "Postcards from the Borderlands," "Monsoon Postcards: Indian Ocean Journeys," and "Postcards from Stanland: Journeys in Central Asia."
