Books We Like: "Adventure Is Out There!"

Some of my fondest memories come from my childhood living in the woods--playing by the creek behind our house, stomping through the wooded trails down the mountain, fashioning an epic-looking staff as a walking stick/sword. My grandaddy encouraged this use of imagination by sharing some of his own crazy stories of adventure, some true and others maybe only partly true. He never was afraid to humor me as I pretended to go on my own grand adventures in our backyard. This fascination stuck with me even into adulthood.

While I recently took the leap myself to go on international adventures, I continue to enjoy the incredible stories from those who have gone to wild, dangerous, awe-inspiring and sometimes downright frightening places. I’ve picked these few for you to get started on your own adventure in your living room, patio, front porch … or wherever you enjoy reading.

Warning: Reading these may result in side effects including curiosity, daring, fearlessness and wanderlust.

Pirate Hunters - Treasure, Obsession, and the Search for a Legendary Pirate Ship by Robert Kurson
Pirates. Treasure. Suspense. Adventure. Need I say more?
Okay, I might need to say more.
If treasure hunters John Chatterton and John Mattera can find the Golden Fleece, the lost ship of the infamous pirate Joseph Bannister, it will be only the second time in the world that a pirate ship has been rediscovered and correctly identified. But the cost of the expedition is great, and Chatterton and Mattera are risking everything to find The Golden Fleece. Bannister’s exploits were more notorious and feared than even Blackbeard’s, and there are rivals who seek the treasure and fame for themselves. Chatterton and Mattera may be in over their heads. Fast-paced with suspense and thrilling adventure that you expect from a story about pirates in the Golden Age of Piracy, you might even forget that these events actually happened.

Driving Hungry by Layne Mosler
Reading this book took me back to what it was like to read “Eat, Pray, Love” and “Under the Tuscan Sun” for the first time. That is to say, it was fantastic and I could not put it down. Written as a memoir, Layne Mosler writes her adventures of hitching taxi rides in Buenos Aires, New York, San Francisco and Berlin and asking the drivers about their favorite restaurants. Once they answered, that’s where she told them to take her. To me, eating is the best way to get acquainted with any culture, and Mosler’s experience was definitely unique. The results of her daring journey helped her spin an amazing adventure story filled with discovery, relationships, and lessons about how things in life can surprise you in the most incredible ways. I would not be surprised if someone in Hollywood will want to adapt this book into a film.

A Delicious Country - Rediscovering the Carolinas Along the Route of John Lawson’s 1700 Expedition by Scott Huler
To be honest, I had only heard of John Lawson’s adventures back in my fourth grade social studies class in the 1990s. And, oh wow, do I wish I learned more about him before! Scott Huler took on the task many of us probably wish we could do: retrace the steps of some of the most influential explorers from history. What’s cool about Huler’s journey is that not only is it a retelling of the escapades from John Lawson’s day (which are gripping and exciting in their own right), but it also shows how the past intertwines with us in the present. I was born and raised in North Carolina, but there were things Huler discovered during his journey through time that even local natives might not know about. It gives me an itch to pack up and head out to explore the Carolina coastline.

Into the Planet: My Life as a Cave Diver by Jill Heinerth
Combine the maze-like experience of the world’s largest cave systems with the vast unknown of the ocean, and you have Jill Heinerth’s true-life experience as a cave diver exploring the expanse of caves beneath the arctic glaciers. My heart was racing from the get-go, for as soon as you start, Heinerth describe in glorious heart-pounding detail, two instances where she brushed up against death as she became lost under the water and the deep caves and crevices of glaciers. For the sake of science and conservation (as well as a thrill fitting for her lifelong sense of adventure), Heinberth has braved many caves and watery journeys to discover what lies beneath the surface.
