Obtaining a Certified Copy (GS 130A-93)
NC General Statues restrict access to certified copies of Birth, Death and Marriage
records. A person may request their own record or those of a family member if the
relative is a spouse, parent, step-parent, child, step-child, sibling, grandparent
or grandchild. Copies are available for determining personal or property rights
and to authorized, attorneys or legal guardians/representatives who show proof of
their authority.
Forsyth County only issues copies of birth, death and marriage records for events
that took place in Forsyth County. We cannot record or issue birth, death and marriage
records from other counties, states or countries.
Copies may be obtained in person or by mail. Requests by mail must include a Copy Request Form which can be printed from our website.
Certified copies have a raised seal and are good for any legal purpose. Un-certified
copies are also available and are generally used for genealogy or family information
purposes. See our fees page for pricing and acceptable
payment. For a recent birth, death or marriage, please allow 10 business days to
process the certificate.
Mail requests with completed forms and acceptable payment, along with a self-addressed
and stamped envelope to our office.
