Frequently Asked Questions

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentists recommends bringing your child to the dentist by the first birthday or the eruption of the first tooth.

In the first visit, you will learn about proper brushing techniques, snacks and drinks that are encouraged and drinks/snacks that should be avoided. You will have a discussion about bottles, sippy cups and oral habits, such as thumb sucking and pacifiers. Your child will also have an exam, toothbrush cleaning, floss and fluoride varnish placed.

Yes, primary ('baby') teeth will fall out but they hold space for permanent teeth. If a child loses a baby tooth too early, this will lead to the teeth moving and will sometimes block out the permanent teeth causing crowding and the need for braces later in life.

Dental sealants fill in the grooves of the teeth, shutting out food particles that could get caught in the grooves and cause cavities. Properly placed sealants drastically reduce the tooth's likelihood of getting a cavity.

Inform your dentist of your fears and the dentist will be able to work with you to calm your nerves and make your dental visit as pleasant as possible. Nitrous oxide ('laughing gas') is available for very anxious patients and children to calm nerves.

A treatment plan will be made at your appointment to best replace your missing teeth. Discussions will include what is covered by insurance, as well as what works best for you.
