Sheriff William T. Schatzman
Sheriff William T. “Bill” Schatzman exemplifies the spirit of law enforcement, not
because of his 24 year career with the FBI, but from what he learned from his family.
Bill’s father was a 30-year veteran of law enforcement and retired as a Major in
the Connecticut State Police. The spirit of public service through law enforcement
was instilled in our sheriff from the very beginning and it has stayed with him.
The sheriff began his career in law enforcement in 1970 when FBI Director J. Edgar
Hoover hired him as Special Agent and assigned him to Washington, D.C., field office.
During his 24 year FBI career, Sheriff Schatzman worked through out the United States
and in Europe. For the 16 years prior to his retirement, he worked in the Greensboro/Winston-Salem
FBI office where he was assigned to investigate violations of federal law. As a
senior agent he was tasked to supervise and train other agents in FBI work and at
the end of his career, he was the FBI Police Training Coordinator for North Carolina
responsible for the training of state and local law enforcement. He coordinated
law enforcement attending the FBI National Academy and the FBI National Executive
Institute. Through out his FBI career, Sheriff Schatzman received numerous commendations
from FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover and the other Directors for whom he worked. He
received recognition for solving bank robberies, supervising undercover operations,
breaking white collar crime cases and training and directing task force cases utilizing
local law enforcement.
Sheriff Schatzman retired from the FBI in 1994 and started Schatzman & Associates,
a security and investigation service. Working with a group of 400 former FBI Agents
located around the world, he consulted with many corporate clients on risk management
matters involving personnel and product security. He also provided investigative
support to law firms in both civil and criminal litigation. While engaged in private
security, he was elected chairman of the North Carolina Chapter of the Society of
Former Special Agents of the FBI (NCSFSAFBI) and chairman of the local chapter of
the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS). His work in private industry
qualified him for membership in the American Association of Certified Fraud Examiners
((CFE).
Sheriff Schatzman was elected in 2002 and is serving his third term as sheriff of
Forsyth County.. He is a member of the North Carolina Sheriff’s Association (NCSA),
past chair of the NCSA Law and Order Committee and is now serving on the NCSA Legislative
Committee. He is a member of the Governor’s Terrorism Preparedness Task Force (GTPTF)
