On July 26, 2014, Officer D. Wilkes was assigned as a Security Officer for housing unit 8B. During a routine security check, Detention Officer Wilkes overheard an inmate tell medical staff that he has previously had heart surgery. The inmate made known to Detention Officer Wilkes that he was not feeling well during lunch distribution. Officer Wilkes observed the inmate had perspiration on his forehead, labored breathing and difficulty speaking.

Detention Officer Wilkes advised the inmate to have a seat and contacted medical staff. During this time, the inmate's condition worsened. Medical staff determined emergency care was needed and the inmate was transported to the hospital. Detention Officer Wilkes is commended for his keen obersvation, compassion and quick thinking to help an inmate in distress.
