Genealogy (Family History)
The North Carolina collection contains approximately 3000 volumes of abstracted records and family histories. While
most of these books relate directly to North Carolina, many concern adjoining states or areas from which there was
considerable migration into North Carolina. There is also a small collection of books relating to heraldry and
coats-of-arms.
Special Files
A small vertical file of genealogical materials has been started, as well as an exchange file for anyone wishing to
contact other researchers in the same line. We encourage patrons to donate copies of their research and/or bible records.
Mail Service
All queries by mail should be accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. There is a minimal charge for
photocopies. Indexes are checked for answers to specific questions, but no extensive research will be done through the
mail.
Genealogical Microfilm
The North Carolina Room houses the census records for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia from 1790-1930, no
census records exist for 1890. The printed statewide indexes for these states, 1790-1870 are available from a N.C. Room librarian.
The Federal Census Soundex Rolls are also available for North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia 1880-1930. The core collection
(North Carolina county records 1740-1868) of county records on microfilm includes wills, deeds, marriage bonds, etc., for Forsyth,
Stokes, Surry, Rowan, Davidson, Davie, Cabarrus and Yadkin counties. Some records go back to 1880, or later, depending on the county.
The North Carolina Room has microfilm readers and printers. Copies made from the film are 15 cents each.
NARA (National Archive and Records Administration)
Few libraries will lend genealogical materials on inter-library loan, but we can request books from those that do.
The North Carolina State Library lends microfilmed county records from the core collection (see above). United States
census records on microfilm may also be requested from the Census Lending Service for a small fee per reel. Requests
for microfilm should be made at the North Carolina Room desk.
Other Services
Although the librarians of the North Carolina Room cannot undertake genealogical research, each staff member will
assist patrons in organizing individual projects. The Library will supply, in limited amounts, a five generation
pedigree chart and forms for recording census information. The staff tries to be aware of services and resources
available in other institutions. Often, when this Library is unable to supply specific information or materials, the
librarian can refer the patron to another nearby library or suggest how to request information from institutions at a
distance.
