Terrifying Reads for Teens Who Want to Be Scared

Horror delivers the chills, whether you're looking for a frisson of fear or an adrenaline rush that has you rushing to turn on the lights! Strongly rooted in folklore and religion, horror fiction draws on the unseen, the unknown, and the uncanny in order to explore -- and expose -- our deepest, darkest fears. These titles are sure to fit the bill for whatever type of horror you are looking for. And as one of my favorite authors once said "Reader beware...you're in for a scare!"

The cemetery boys (Mar 2015) by Heather Brewer

When Stephen moves to the midwestern town where his father grew up, he quickly falls in with punk girl Cara and her charismatic twin brother, Devon, but the town has a dark secret, and the twins are caught in the middle of it.

Wax (Aug 2016) by Gina Damico

Seventeen-year-old Poppy stumbles into a secret workshop at the infamous Grosholtz Candle Factory and soon, a wax boy called Dud is helping her uncover an evil plot that threatens her hometown of Paraffin, Vermont.

The accident season (Aug 2015) by Moi¨ra Fowley-Doyle

"Every October Cara and her family become mysteriously and dangerously accident-prone, but this year, the year Cara, her ex-stepbrother, and her best friend are 17, is when Cara will begin to unravel the accident season's dark origins"--.

Zomburbia (Aug 2014) by Adam J. Gallardo

Displeased with her small-town life in Salem, Oregon, Courtney Hart sells drugs through the drive-thru at her job to earn enough money to run away to New York, while avoiding both the advances of boys in her high school and the town's ever-present zombiehorde.

The sleepwalkers (Oct 2011) by J. Gabriel Gates

When he receives a mysterious, disturbing letter from his long-lost childhood playmate Christine, privileged and popular Caleb, celebrating his high school graduation, travels to his tiny hometown of Hudsonville, Florida, to find her, uncovering terrifying prophecies of the spirits.

The Rains (Oct 2016) by Gregg Hurwitz

When the adults in Creek's Cause turn into ferocious, inhuman beings, Chance Rain and his older brother, Patrick, take refuge with other kids at the school, where they work to find the source of the plague.

Children of the dark (Mar 2016) by Jonathan Janz

"Taking care of his six-year-old sister and his mother, who is addicted to drugs, has forced 15-year-old Will to grow up quickly in his small Southern town of Shadeland. Will and his group of outcast friends face the usual torments: bullying by the in-crowd and girls who seem just out of reach. But things are not always what they seem. Mia, the girl of Will's dreams, seems to reciprocate Will's feelings. All goes well—until the bullies enter the scene and one of the girls is hauled off into the woods by a monsterlike hand. An intricate intermingled plot involving evil creatures keeps this title from being a typical coming-of -age story." - School Library Journal

The house (Oct 2015) by Christina Lauren

Told in their separate voices, Gavin, a loner outcast, and Delilah, back in small-town Kansas after years at a Massachusetts boarding school, reconnect their senior year, but as their relationship deepens, it is clear that the eerie house Gavin dwells in will do anything to keep the two apart.
