Thanks to Walkertown Community for Summertime Support

If you attended free programs, read library books, watched library videos, joined Friends of the Walkertown Library, volunteered your time and talents, or shopped at our used book sales, you were part of a community that supported the Walkertown Branch Library this summer.

More than 18,000 books, audiobooks, magazines, and videos were borrowed during June and July. During those eight weeks, our Sci-Works passes were enjoyed by eighteen families.

Pictured above is the work of local artist Donna Walter, who adorned Walkertown's patio with a replica of Picasso's Woman Asleep on "Chalk, Prizes, and Movie Day." Her picture joined the chalk drawings of dozens of children on a sunny Tuesday afternoon. This program was one of 118 total programs for adults, teens, and children during June and July. Subtracting eight Sundays and one holiday from sixty-one days yields fifty-two days of public service; so, yes, that's more than two programs per day on average. Thank you for attending these programs!

Three summer programs to motivate and reward children for reading filled the auditorium to capacity with a fourth program coming close. Donna Pruett, The Balloon Lady, sculpted super heroes while reminding 140 people to accept whatever makes us different from each other, to consider our differences as strengths.

Ronald McDonald and the North Carolina Zoo also drew crowds of 140 each. Captain Jim entertained and encouraged 133 people. Bright Star Theater's live play Jackie Robinson and Matt Sandbank's one-man shadow puppet show,The Legend of Walter Weirdbeard, each attracted 90 people. Adding all the people at all the programs--June and July--gives us a record-setting number for total summer attendance: 2,993. That's one full summer of reading, fun, and learning for which the hearts of many people, young and old, are full of thanks.
