Showcasing Summer Reading Success at Walkertown

Walkertown Branch sends heartfelt thanks to program attendees, volunteers, program presenters, and--especially--all the hundreds of readers who registered and entered so many titles and minutes spent with books, audiobooks, or ebooks this summer.

From movie-makers Wayne and Olena Crawford who volunteered with an educational and entertaining visit in June to model rocket instructors Ann and Art Riddle who volunteered all day July 30, each week brought programs to reinforce summer reading and learning goals.

Ronald McDonald, Science Madness, and Fish the Magish highlighted the fun of "Fizz, Bang, READ" during June. Local mixed-media Artist Priscilla Williams and Poet Carl Lombardi shared their talents in June, as well.

During July, Local Artist Dot Duggins continued the fun by leading more than sixty youth in Pointillism Painting. The next week, Peppercorn Children's Theatre presented their original portrayal of the life of Astronaut Mae Jemison in the unforgettable show, Fantastic Endeavour. A week later, Shadow Puppeteer Matt Sandbanks' original version of Rapunzel enthralled a full house of children, teens, and adults, alike.

Finally, who could follow The Balloon Lady, with her dazzling combination of science, music, and created-before-our-eyes sculptures? She rounded out our offerings for all ages.

Including a teen movie, a sidewalk chalk event, and weekly children's Storytimes and Music-and-Movement, our 30 programs for youth and families reached more than 1600 people this summer. That's a lot of fun, a lot of book-borrowing, and a lot of community support!

Adults enjoyed Summer Reading as well with topics ranging from art and photography to yoga and a visit with NC author T. S. Krupa. Forty-three programs for adults were offered at Walkertown in June and July.

We're thrilled to congratulate the winners of $25 Barnes and Noble gift certificates, sponsored by Friends of Walkertown Library: JP Gilchrist, pictured above, Children's Winner; Emily Bohanon, pictured below, Teen Winner; and Carol Lambeth, Adult Winner. We look forward to more reading, listening, learning, and program attending throughout the months ahead.
