Cynthia Lawing has performed with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, the Macau Philharmonic Orchestra, the Charlotte Symphony, the Davidson College Symphony Orchestra, the Cleveland Institute of Music Orchestra, the Springfield Symphony, the Western Piedmont Symphony, the Salisbury Symphony, the Piedmont Concert Band, and the Charlotte Concert Band. She has performed concerti by Beethoven, Mozart, Ravel, Shostakovitch, Bach, Grieg, Saint-Saens, Poulenc, Chopin, and Gershwin. Her joint performances with Dr. William Lawing, trumpeter, took them to Chile, China, and--this summer--to a return recital series and master classes in Taiwan.

Lawing is a member of the Bechtler Ensemble, frequently presenting recitals combining art and music at area art museums. She is a member of the Lawing/Cook Duo piano team presenting works for two pianos and one-piano-four-hands. Her recent recital venues include Mars Hill University, UNC Charlotte, Rollins College, Sarasota Archives and Long Boat Key, Florida.

Lawing has served as a board member at WDAV (Davidson Classical Public Radio) and the North Carolina Music Teachers Association. Twice she has been the state’s clinician and frequently serves as jury member in piano competitions. One of Lawing’s students, Jeffrey Roth was the State winner at the 2010 Music Teachers National Association competition. He was the first student at Davidson College to receive this honor.

Lawing’s solo piano repertoire for the season focuses on music by Russian composers of the Romantic era as well as the Silver Age.

This performance by Cynthia Lawing will focus on works for solo piano by some of the most-loved Russian composers. Works for the piano by Rachmaninov, Khachaturian and Scriabin will be featured. These compositions are dreamy, lush, expressive, poetic, dramatic and evocative of certain mood and remembrances.

The concert is free and open to the public. No reservation required. Call the library at 336-703-2990 for more information.
