Stroke is the third leading cause of death in the United States, and it can also cause serious long-term disability in an individual according to the Center for Disease Control. A quick way to remember the signs and symptoms of a possible stroke are the acronym F.A.S.T.:

  • Facial weakness. Ask the individual to smile. If their mouth is crooked this could be a sign of stroke.
  • Arm and leg weakness. Can the individual raise their arms or are they dropping?
  • Speech. Can the individual speak clearly or is their speech slurred?
  • Time.Time is critical, so if the individual is experiencing any of these signs or symptoms call 911 immediately.
