Author Emily Herring Wilson is coming to Southside

EVENT RESCHEDULED!

Emily Herring Wilson, author and poet, visits Southside to talk about North Carolina's own beloved writer and gardener, Elizabeth Lawrence.

Lawrence, the first woman graduate of the landscape design program at North Carolina State University, gardened and grew as an author in the mid-twentieth century, while struggling to make a living in her chosen field. Her A Southern Garden, published in 1942, is now a classic in garden literature.

Wilson will speak about Lawrence's life and development as a gardener, author and friend as revealed through personal letters to her friend and mentor, Ann Preston Bridgers. Ms. Wilson will also be signing copies of her new book based on the letters, Becoming Elizabeth Lawrence: Discovered Letters of a Southern Gardener.
