Animal Control

Volunteer Opportunities

The Forsyth County Department of Animal Control depends on the support of our community. Join a dedicated team of like-minded individuals who strive to make the world a better place for animals and people. Each year, hundreds of our neighbors donate their time to help homeless animals. The Forsyth County Department of Animal Control welcomes your involvement.

Orientations for volunteers 16 and older are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the Animal Shelter. Orientation begins promptly at 6 pm and lasts approximately an hour. It’s the first step to volunteering with us. After you have attended an orientation we ask you toe schedule training with us in the area you are interested in volunteering your time. For more information call 703-2467.

How can you help?

Animal Care:

  • Help us provide a clean, safe environment for the animals in our care.
  • Socialize animals and provide basic training as part of our SPOT (Shelter Pet Obedience Training) program. Give shelter pets the tools they need to thrive in their new homes.

Adoption Assistance:

  • Help shelter pets find the perfect home! A great way to spend your free time: helping a homeless animal find his/her forever home.
  • Greeting the public, directing clients around the shelter, answering visitor’s questions, assisting the public with viewing animals.

Neighborhood Canvassing:

  • Door to door canvassing with Animal Control Officers to promote spay and neuter and licensing requirements.
  • Distribute literature; licensing applications, adoption applications, volunteer applications and County Code information.

Houses for Hounds:

  • Volunteers may assist in the pick up and delivery of dog houses to needy homes, pass out flyers.

AniMeals

  • A great way to help animals and the people who love them!
  • Deliver donated pet food to needy clients in Forsyth County.
  • Pick up donated food from donation bins.

Special Events

  • Home for The Holidays: An annual adoption initiative.
  • Rabies Clinics: April & October at the Dixie Classic Fairgrounds
  • Reynolda Village Pet Stroll: Support for low-income assistance programs

Public Education:
The Department of Animal Control has many programs and avenues of assistance available to members of our community. Help us get this information to the community! This would involve a responsible adult to drive to specified locations for brochures to be distributed.

Volunteer Opportunities for Kids 16 and Under:

  • Rabies Clinics - For kids ages 14 and older you can assist staff members and other volunteers at a clinic with paperwork and other duties. It’s a great way for you to help your community.
  • AniMeals - Kids can make a BIG impact assisting staff members in the Animeals Program. Volunteers would place containers in neighborhoods, churches, schools etc. to promote donation of pet food for the AniMeals Program. AniMeals is a regulated program Animal Control over sees providing pet food for seniors and low income residents of Forsyth County on a sort term basis. It’s a great opportunity for kids to utilize many of the skills needed in today’s world from contacting potential sites for a container to be placed to organizing the efforts to pick up and bring the donations to the shelter.

For complete information, view our Policy Statement. If interest in volunteering, print an Adult Volunteer Application and Agreement
