Books We Like - Beach Reads

Beach reads. The name conjures it all … sitting in the hot sun with the ocean breeze cooling you down, sunglasses on, something cold to drink in one hand, and a great book in the other. These are the books you’ve looked forward to all year. The ones where you can relax, get lost in the moment, and just enjoy reading. If you are getting ready to go on vacation or even just want the “beach read” experience for an evening at home here are a few recommendations.

“Mrs. Everything” by Jennifer Weiner is about two sisters growing up in Detroit in the 1950s and ’60s and follows their lives until present day. Jo and Bethie could not be more different from each other. One a tomboy and rebel, the other a proper young lady destined for a more traditional life, these sisters know what they want and how to get it. However, the trials and experiences of their lives in the ’60s changes them forever. Jennifer Weiner tells the story of these two women who had different dreams and different paths, but who both find their lives may not be what they thought it should be in this voyage of self-discovery. This book is a beautiful way to explore what it means to be a woman, then and now.

Jane Green explores friendship, betrayal, and forgiveness in “The Friends We Keep.” College friends Maggie, Evvie, and Topher thought they would be friends forever, but they drift apart. Their lives don’t go as planned and each has some major setbacks they need to overcome. Now at their 30th year reunion, they have a chance at reigniting their friendship, but only if they can be honest and forgiving with each other and themselves. Is it too late to reconnect and mend their relationship? Can they each find happiness with their own lives and the choices they’ve made? You’ll have to read the book to find out.

“Beautiful Ruins” by Jess Walter is a lavishly set story that follows some fascinating characters in Italy for the filming of Cleopatra (including Richard Burton). This story goes back and forth between modern Hollywood and the small coastal resort in Italy's Cinque Terre. While the book spans 50 years and many settings, the focus is the relationship between an innkeeper and the American starlet who stayed at his hotel. The writing is delectable and the characters are captivating. You’ll want to finish this one in one sitting.

“Summer Sisters” by Judy Blume is the quintessential beach read. This book is about an enduring friendship set on Martha's Vineyard. In the summer of 1977, Victoria Leonard makes the fateful decision of becoming friends with the reckless and entrancing Caitlin Somers. Years later, when Caitlin invites Victoria to her wedding, Victoria is forced to confront what caused the rupture in their friendship.

So, give one of these reads about love, friendship, and life a try. Also, don’t forget our library’s Summer Reading program is going on and is for all ages. Check out our website, www.forsythlibrary.org, for more details on how you can participate.
