Library Board Chair's Message

Greetings from the Board of Trustees of the Forsyth County Public Library! By working with the Library’s staff and administration, we hope to make your visits to the Library a success in person, over the phone or over the Internet. We believe that Forsyth County Public Library delivers the best library service in the Southeast, and is improving every day.

Visit in person and greet the staff, and if you are new, make sure you sign up for your library card right away. The Library’s SIRSI web-based catalog not only displays cover art for items selected, but usually offers annotations and reviews. You can also manage your own account over the Internet, reserving books, checking any overdues, etc., and you can now choose to receive your overdue and reserved book notices via email. Notices are sent instantly and save paper and postage.

A new service available online is NextReads, accessed through the Online Resources link. If you choose NextReads on the webpage, you will be guided through selecting your own reading interest categories. You will then receive regular emailed “newsletters” with annotated recommendations of new and old titles in the Library’s collection matching your areas of interest. It’s a great way to find out about new books to read!

Complimenting the Live Homework Help online tutoring is an exciting web service called “NCknows, Answers from Pros.” Through chat technology over your computer, a librarian leads you live to the answers you need, often using an Internet site such as NCLIVE. So…the Library is never closed! And your questions are answered fast.

Let’s talk about reading. The Library’s fall 2009 “On the Same Page/Big Read” book selection is Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston. Published in 1937, this moving novel tells the story of a teen-age African American girl who grows into a woman and takes charge of her destiny. It is a love story and full of adventure as young Janie travels from the all-black town of Eatonville, Florida to the Florida Keys. The title of the book is inspired by a real-life hurricane that Zora Neale Hurston survived and incorporated into the novel.

We view the Library as the hub of our community, and the success of the new Lewisville Branch Library, which opened in 2007 shows once again: “Great Libraries Build Great Communities.” Lewisville features easy self-checkout using RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) technology, which is more convenient for customers than barcode scanning. A new Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) grant is allowing us to implement RFID at two more branches by summer of 2010.

To know what’s really going on, look for the “Library Page” in the Winston-Salem Journal and The Chronicle every other month. You’ll read about new services, major events and other news. And to check the complete Calendar, click on Calendar of Events on the website or ask Library staff to print out a copy for you.
