About the DepartmentEnvironmental Affairs BoardIn 1976, the Environmental Affairs Board was established for the purpose of advising the Forsyth County Board of Commissioners and assisting the Forsyth County Environmental Affairs Department with topics related to environmental management. The Environmental Affairs Board consists of seven members who are appointed for three year terms by the Board of Commissioners. The goals of the Board are to encourage the wise and beneficial use of the natural environment of Forsyth County, minimize the adverse impact of environmental contaminants on human health and welfare, and foster public awareness of environmental considerations. The Board holds regular public meetings in the Board Room of the Environmental Affairs Department Building in downtown Winston-Salem. These meetings are used to conduct public hearings, request expert testimony, receive and study ordinances, programs, and reports of the Environmental Affairs Department, and to keep abreast of developments relating to environmental management within Forsyth County and North Carolina. The Board also issues Annual Special Air Quality and Special Environmental Awards to recognize deserving industrial and institutional sources. Additionally, any person taking exception to any decision, ruling, violation notice, or order issued by the Director of the Environmental Affairs Department may appeal to the Board. The findings and recommendations of the Board are transmitted to the Director or to the Forsyth County Manager for presentation to the Board of Commissioners, whichever is appropriate.
