Animal Control

Advisory Board

The Forsyth County Animal Control Advisory Board is an eleven (11) member board, appointed by the Board of County Commissioners. The Advisory Board has two types of meetings that alternate monthly.

1. Advisory Board Public Meeting
Day: 3rd Thursday of the month
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Forsyth County Animal Shelter
5570 Sturmer Park Circle
Winston-Salem, NC 27105

This meeting is utilized as a forum to solicit public opinion on ordinances, services, and policy. This function also provides information on services, other than those of the Animal Control Department, available within the community and facilitates the Animal Control Department’s identification and interaction with community goals and projects.

2. Appeal Hearing Tribunal
Day: 3rd Thursday of the month
Time: 6:00 p.m.
Location: Forsyth County Animal Shelter

A sub-committee of the Advisory Board hears appeals of civil citations and abatement orders, and provides a written recommendation regarding final disposition to the department Director.

Fuctions of the Board Include:

  • Advising the Board of County Commissioners on issues and needs relating to animal services.
  • Assisting in the development of a five-year strategic plan for animal services.
  • Acting as an appeal hearing tribunal.
  • Performing further, other duties, as directed by the Board of County Commissioners.

Duties of the Board Include:

  • Reporting to the Board of County commissioners, no less often than once annually, on recommended modifications, or additions to Title 8 Animals, of the County Code, and to the general operations of the animal protection and control;
  • Act as an appeal hearing tribunal pursuant to Section 8.19.080 of the County Code;
  • Perform such further duties as may be authorized or directed by resolution of the Board of County Commissioners.
